AUGUST TOPIC: Plans before pills: a kinder, safer approach to medications for those with autism

As a parent of an individual with autism, Dr Feder understands the struggles families often face when trying to determine the best course of treatment for their loved one, and offers practical advice and tools that parents can use.

GUEST SPEAKER: Joshua D. Feder, M.D, Child and Family Psychiatry Solano Beach

Dr. Joshua Feder is a child and family psychiatrist with a clinical practice in Solana Beach, California, Editor in Chief at the Carlat Child Psychiatry Report, author of the Child Medication Fact Book for Psychiatric Practice (2nd Ed 2023) and Medical Director at Positive Development, providing affordable developmental relationship-based support for autistic children and their families nationwide.


He is the father of an autistic son and the son of an autistic father. Dr Feder cowrote the first American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Practice Parameter on the Assessment and Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Feder teaches, conducts research on approaches to autism early childhood and on employability of autistic individuals and helps run the Autism Is inclusion program, the only active antibullying program certified by the State of California Department of Education. Alyssa Delagnes – Participant Choice Specialist – San Diego Regional Center
Alyssa Delagnes graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Disability Studies. She started working for a regional center vendor in the West Los Angeles area, and then was hired as a Service Coordinator for ages 3-22 at Westside Regional Center, where she worked for 4 years. In July 2021, Alyssa moved back to her hometown of San Diego where she started working at SDRC as a Service Coordinator for in-home adults. Throughout her years as an SC, Alyssa has helped clients and their families enroll and participate in the Self Determination Program, which led to her becoming a Participant Choice Specialist in April 2023. Anna Keller – Participant Choice Specialist - San Diego Regional Center
Anna Keller, M.A. has been working in the field of helping individuals with developmental disabilities for over 20 years. Her specialty is helping provide Regional Center clients and their families with information and support on how to navigate the Regional Center system and services provided in their communities. In 2019, Anna helped SDRC participants navigate the Self-Determination lottery and become participants in the Self-Determination Program (SDP). Since then Anna has become a Participant Choice Specialist at SDRC to provide hands on support, guidance, and technical information to others enrolling and participating in SDP.  She is passionate about SDP participants experiencing meaningful and fulfilling lives.
