Last fall, NFAR awarded a Community Project Grant to several SDSU Masters in Autism Education students to conduct a Parent Training series for families of transitioning students in the Grossmont Union High School District.

The 7-week program included special guest speakers, materials, and notes by topic. Topics included: Transition Planning and the Law; Post Secondary Education and Supports; Funding Options for Transition and Services; Employment; Conservatorship and Special Needs Trusts; Supported Living; Parent Support Groups; and Recreational/ Leisure Activities.

All of the families who participated in the series walked away feeling more empowered with the knowledge they gained through the workshops and we were honored when some attendees shared their thoughts with us:

“I gained a better understanding of what is to come with transition. I am no longer fearful of the processes or his future. Thank you.”

“The information presented was very helpful, but more importantly for me was the connection I feel to other parents in the similar situation.”

“This was great. I highly recommend it be something offered in the future to parents.”
