TOPIC: Innovative ways to independence: using Fitbits, activity schedules, and more to increase conversation, participation, and social skills

Guest Speaker: Jenna Sleichter M.A., BCBA and Sophia Felix. BS Child Development

Jenna is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who also holds a master’s degree in Special Education with an Emphasis in Autism from San Diego State University. For 7 years she taught a moderate-severe special education classroom for grades K-8. Currently she works as the Behavior Specialist for a well know school district in Southern California as well as a part time lecturer at San Diego State University where she educates students in the areas of behavior, Autism, and evidence based practices. In addition she also supervises credentialed teachers pursuing their master’s degrees in education as well as Behavior Analyst certifications through SDSU. Jenna is passionate about advocating for the best education for students. Outside of the school settings, Jenna has worked in home with students with Autism and their families both privately and through various ABA companies. She has developed programs overseas for students with Autism and is the creator of different curriculum designed to increase verbal communication, conversation, and concepts of time for students on the spectrum. She recently founded UnboxedEd through which she shares these curriculum and other resources for educators and families.  She is a mother of three.

Sophia recently graduated from SDSU with a BS in Child Development and Is currently studying for her masters in ABA! She began her journey in ABA 3 years ago with a private company doing in home therapy and fell in love! Recently, She works with a local school District and the behavior support team!

Our guest speaker, Chantal Sicile-Kira will be discussing "What is really important in the long run to preparing your son or daughter for a life of their own."  Also, insights and discussion about community safety, things we need to be doing to help and more.”

Guest Speaker: Chantal Sicile Kira, Professional Speaker, Author, and Autism Mom

Chantal Sicile-Kira is the award-winning author of six books, a professional speaker, an advocate and leader in the field of autism, with over 25 years of experience. Chantal has served on various non-profit and advisory boards. Chantal’s first practical experience with autism was teaching functional living skills to severely developmentally disabled adolescents in preparation for their de-institutionalization, then as a case manager at Orange County Regional Center. Little did she realize at the time how these work experiences would help her years later when Jeremy was born.

Chantal’s books include:  Autism Spectrum Disorder (revised edition, Penguin 2014); A Full Life with Autism (Macmillan 2012)What is Autism? (Turner 2012);Autism Life Skills (Penguin 2008); Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum (Penguin 2006)​ as well as the workbook A Beginner’s Guide to Self-Employment (2019).

Chantal’s current project in development with Intrepid Theatre  is the play Greatly, I Dream, chronicling Chantal’s journey raising her son, award-winning painter Jeremy Sicile-Kira, as they navigate the challenges of autism and synesthesia to find connection, language, artistry and grace. In her free time, Chantal continues to help Jeremy grow his art business at Jeremy’s Vision.

MAY 27 TOPIC: PREPARE TO RELAX! JOIN US FOR A MINDFULNESS EXERCISE!

Meghan will guide you through a relaxing mindfulness experience of deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and visual imagery. No experience necessary! Come as you are. Ideally, join the Zoom meeting in comfortable clothes, from a quiet place where you can sit or lie down comfortably. Let go and let Meghan do the work.

Meghan is a part of the instructional team for the NFAR Vocational Training Programs, NFAR Tech and NFAR Works. She is also a Mindfulness enthusiast and leads mindfulness exercises at retreats and Zoom meetings. Come experience the benefits these exercises bring to so many with busy, stressful lives!
